UNESCO means more than a beautiful old town
UNESCO recognises places of outstanding universal value. The historic town of Banská Štiavnica and technical monuments nearby have been World Heritage since 1993. Mining, urban life and water engineering form a connected story: the tajchy stored water to power mining equipment. This is cultural heritage, not UNESCO natural heritage. The designation covers the inscribed ensemble and does not certify the apartments.
Streets, townhouses and castles
Late Gothic and Renaissance houses shape the town. St Catherine’s Church and the Old and New Castles reflect different periods of its history. For a first visit, we suggest an old town walk with time for a café and a museum that interests you.
Explore the Calvary
The baroque Calvary stands on a hill above the town. The climb combines architecture with broad views of Banská Štiavnica and the surrounding landscape. Choose comfortable shoes and plan around the weather and your fitness.
